By the way, I'm flabbergasted that Maude came out only two years after the debut of the Mary Tyler Moore show. They ran concurrantly. I have some memory of Maude; maybe the difference of a year made all the difference. But maybe it was the content as well.

That reminds me of the first episode of "All in the Family." It included a few words that I had never encountered. I went to my mother and asked, "What's a Guinea? What's a WOP?"

Ha! How old were you?

I remember distinctly playing Purple Rain on my cassette player when I was nine. I was on the couch, singing "Darling Nikki", the lyric that goes sitting in a hotel lobby masturbating with a magazine. My mother came in and asked, "Do you know what 'masturbate' means?" When I shook my head no, she let me continue listening to it.

I was eleven years old when I saw the first episode of "All in the Family."

Your story about Purple Rain reminds me of a gym teacher who caught some of the kids using foul language. When he asked them what the words actually meant, they hadn't a clue.
