Anybody want to comment on the present state of affairs? Swine flu, Arlen Specter, David Souter, or other topics?

In the meantime: Olbermann pressing on Hannity's waterboard offer

Swine flue == no big deal. Regular flu kills more people. Hell, unswept flues probably kill more people.

Specter == LOVE the proposed changes. Hope they work.

Souter == Glad we have an Obama instead of a McCain.

#1--Agreed (with a minor giggle). But the government does need to be seen as in command and having the situation under control.

#2--Specter is not going to be a reliable Democratic vote. He admitted he switched parties because he couldn't survive the upcoming primary. I don't know how much of an asset he truly is.

#3--Me too!!

However, Specter isn't Lieberman, who can count on his notoriously conservative followers to elect him regardless. The dems have leverage on Specter and in truth, party-changers are always figures of distrust both to their new party and the old one, so he's fairly screwed and should be more or less agreeable.

Well, as I understand it, Specter was a Democrat to begin with, so he's had a history of flipping. I just think he's more conservative than any other political bent.

I was trying to figure out why he didn't just change to an independent. I have ideas, but I'm still not sure.

Regular flu kills like <0.1% of its victims. Swine flu, on the other hand, appears to be killing 3% of its victims (worldwide) now. While 3% is still "not a lot," it's more than the regular 'flu, by percentages.

Individually, if regular 'flu kills more people, it's because way more people have had regular 'flu. Hopefully, this remains the case.

Just sayin'.

I guess one of the things I'm thinking about is my complete lack of surprise that Obama has been going back on a variety of promises and not only has given the previous administration and the intelligence community a pass, but is continuing a lot of the very dubious legal and civil violations.

This Unitary Executive trend doesn't go to a good place.

I'm not surprised, either, and I think that's because he went back on some of his campaign promises while he was on the trail!

I don't know what to expect from Obama. I am glad that he is nominally liberal, but I don't know how deep that goes.
