It really disturbs me to think that more than one Michigan sixth grader thinks that Martin Luther King freed the slaves.

Well, in his defense, he likely would have had they still been slaves when he was born.

Okay, I concede that point. (Although he was a product of his times and I don't believe that civil disobedience in that place and time would have worked nearly as effectively.) But more likely the students believe that slavery didn't end until the 1960s. I know that Americans famously lack a sense of history but, for something so fundamental, that's a bit alarming.

Well yes, if you want to be all serious about it. I find a bit of levity goes a long way towards tolerating the deplorable lack of education in our society.

Uhm, no, my sense of levity on the subject went out the window when I met a high-schooler who did not know what the European Union is.
