It really disturbs me to think that more than one Michigan sixth grader thinks that Martin Luther King freed the slaves.

Okay, I concede that point. (Although he was a product of his times and I don't believe that civil disobedience in that place and time would have worked nearly as effectively.) But more likely the students believe that slavery didn't end until the 1960s. I know that Americans famously lack a sense of history but, for something so fundamental, that's a bit alarming.

Well yes, if you want to be all serious about it. I find a bit of levity goes a long way towards tolerating the deplorable lack of education in our society.
