McCain is losing. Everything about his current tactics is indicative of a campaign on the ropes. That they can stir up these people into a mouth-foaming frenzy only indicates that their followers are the least rational people in the voting pool, and the campaign is using the last card they have.
The McCain campaign statements sound generic enough that I'm not convinced they were talking about the same "traitor"/"kill him" people that the article was. Or they just weren't paying attention.
