MN is in question partly because we have a Republican governor who is very pro-McCain.

There's also a very definite rural vs. urban vs. suburban divide. Rural leans GOP, urban is strong DFL, and suburban is strong GOP. If you pander to the rural vote in MN, you tend to win the state, because they're our equivalent of "swing voters". In good farm years, rural folks vote GOP; in bad years, they vote DFL/Democrat. (Not always, but that's the usual trend.)

Okay. Perhaps I'd been laboring under a mistaken belief due to commentators saying how Republicans were going into not necessarily friendly country when the RNC scheduled their convention in St. Paul.

Michigan, too, has large swaths of rural voters, especially on the west side of the state. I was pleased to no end to hear that McCain had decided to pull all of his efforts from here.

Well, as of recent polling McCain is behind by a double-digit figure in MI, so it makes sense. I'm so glad, because I didn't think that'd happen here.
