Oct. 20th, 2003 09:58 pmToday on my way home, I sat behind a man who spoke to himself. His voice wasn't loud--he didn't attract attention more than a row or two around him--but his chatter was constant. The more I listened, the more it sounded like he was just repeating the same sentence. There was barely a second between each sentence. And he always turned his head to the left when he spoke. Sometimes he'd wipe his mouth and slip his hand down his beard. But always he'd return to his sentence.
Some of the other passengers gave him odd looks. Though I sat right behind him, I kept from staring. I politely looked out the window.
I think that was my first time truly observing someone who I can only guess is borderline (if not firmly) schizophrenic. He was functional--when he boarded, he asked the driver if he went to Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti, and when we arrived at the transit station, he got right up and departed. I don't judge him when I say he might be schizophrenic. I was just amazed to witness what I did.
