I kind of feel the same way about writing.

As do I. Thus, I tagged it under 'writing advice' (as I'm not a painter).

Sometimes, one needs to blur or smudge some things for the sake of the poem, but the addition of details doesn't need to be there. That's inserting oneself into the poem.
