Shame of Guantanamo

[T]he International Committee of the Red Cross has voiced concern about the deteriorating mental health of those in military detention for more than 18 months; 21 of the captives in the U.S. war on terrorism have tried suicide, some more than once. They occupy a legal no- man's-land without access to lawyers or visitors and without being criminally charged.

[...] U.S. investigators have had the better part of two years to collect evidence, and should be ready to charge those deserving to be tried. Keeping a filled lockup at Guantanamo, while active terrorists roam the world, is not going to win the post-Sept. 11 war.

Self-fulfilling prophecy

The detainees probably include some likely to attempt future mayhem against the United States.

If I'd been locked up like that for 2+ years, especially if I were innocent, "mayhem" would be putting it lightly.

We're breeding our own enemies.
