ESPN just showed a segment of an interview of a black woman who worked for NASCAR and is now involved in a lawsuit against them for harassment.

I don't care how many disclaimers a station makes about offensive language, but the word "nigger" should not be broadcast over the airwaves. I know it's cable. I don't care. I don't care that the woman is the one who used the word. It doesn't matter. That did not need to be said over the airwaves at 8:30 in the morning on a Friday morning, holiday or not.

What in the hell is going on in my country?

As long as they bleep the words George Carlin talked about, they should bleep that. Or maybe even longer.

HBO doesn't bleep, and if they followed [livejournal.com profile] novapsyche's request they would have to cancel or censor Def Comedy Jam. I agree that the N word is inappropriate on ESPN. I think it depends on the context. Should BET ban music videos by African American artists whose lyrics use the N word?

HBO is not part of the basic cable package; one must opt into HBO. Also, HBO has a long history with off-color language, so the average HBO viewer is familiar with this and accepts this as a possibility. I do not think this is true of ESPN and its audience.
