I am very unhappy with the positions Barack Obama has taken this last week, first on the FISA bill and now on the issue of faith-based initiatives.

I am being reminded how I very much was an Edwards girl, and I wonder how different things would have been had he stayed in through Super Tuesday.

Iowans did not serve us well.

I'm pretty unhappy with those two positions as well. I've seen first-hand what "faith-based" initiatives can do if they've gone over to the dark side. It's not pretty.

What I read, and certainly I could be mistaken, is that Obama only wishes to allow faith groups to participate in government run anti-poverty programs, and that is the only thing for which they would receive charitable funding. I also heard an interview with him this morning on NPR, to that same effect. It should be available on wcpn.org (my local npr)

Have you heard otherwise? I'm genuinely curious.

I watched Countdown and heard him for himself.

Religion does not need to be in the state square. If he's going to do what Bush did "but better", I don't want it.

What did you hear on countdown, the interview on NPR was not complete, and it may well have been the same one.

Obama is talking about adding restrictions on proselytizing or religious requirements for employees. With those, it gets back to my view of objections to school vouchers based on the possibility that they'd go to a parochial school: Paying a church for a service is not an endorsement of the religion.

I'm disappointed that Obama seems to be abandoning his own strengths. He would be the perfect Democratic spokesman to get the message through of just how much the lawful FISA process already allows, and that anything an administration wants to bypass the process for is probably not a legitimate security issue, but corruption on their part. This could have been a good election issue for all Democrats.
