Eisenhower, it all comes back to Eisenhower.

Truman had done a lot that conservatives disliked. The country had been Democratic for so long, citizens didn't know what the nation would be like without it. They had to have hungered for something new. So that's Eisenhower, whose most enduring legacy (the highway system) is contributing to global warming.

Americans were free before 1950. After that, the Pentagon, the CIA and all of their brothers were invented.

Why Eisenhower? The Pentagon was born of World War II, founded by Roosevelt. The highway system was planned then (admittedly by Eisenhower in his role of General) and then implemented under his presidency. This is a chicken-and-egg situation; each era is a reaction against the era that came before.

Meanwhile, it's June 30, and my son is complaining that it's too cold to go swimming today (which it is, as it's currently 61F, heading for a high of 72F). Where is our share of global warming? :-)

The WWII US intelligence organization OSS was reorganized as tbe CIA in 1948 under Truman. In those early years its agents assisted European anti-communists in the Greek Civil War and in several western European elections. Under Eisenhower's CIA Director Allen Dulles (brother of Eisenhower's Secretary of State John Foster Dulles) the CIA got into the business of regime change (Iran 1953 and Guatemala 1954). President Kennedy fired Dulles after the Bay of Pigs failed invasion of Cuba.

I'd put it back to December 23rd, 1913, when the government and big business finally officially said "I do" in signing the Federal Reserve Act after most of Congress had already gone home for Christmas.

Another big plot point is the Kennedy assassination, no matter how insignificant Chomsky thinks that event was. That was the moment when the fascist sect won the war.

Yeah, I was thinking back to 1913 (that's around the time the 13th Amendment was passed as well). I guess I just don't have a good enough feel for turn-of-the-century everyday America or its politics. I need to read up more.
