So, how does one find out what gas prices are like in other parts of the world? What I especially want to know is if other countries have experienced such a dramatic increase in price as the US has.

Here's 1. No time to dig deeper, but I searched for international gas prices.

Interesting chart. I wonder how they cope with the changing exchange rate, though; if they use the prevailing exchange rate at the time for each row, then it's going to look like a much steeper rise than it really is to a European consumer because of the plummeting value of the dollar.

may be of interest. Generally, in Europe, the increase hasn't been nearly as dramatic percentage-wise because such a high proportion of petrol price is made up of tax rather than raw costs, and in the UK at least the government has held off on increasing those taxes in order to cushion the prices a bit and avoid protests.

Also, the increase in Europe hasn't been as bad because the dollar has been busy sinking like a rock when compared against other currencies (i.e., the Euro).

Here's a friend's entry with a handy gas price in dollar-vs-euro chart.

The plural of Anecdote isn't Data. However, a friend just returned from 2 years in Japan. He said that the price in that time went from about 4.50 to about 7.50 a gallon where he was.

I was just hearing that the gas spikes in other countries were less painful due to the falling dollar (and oil being priced in dollars).

This is true. Our gas prices are up 300% in recent years but in Europe it's only up 200% because oil is priced in US$ which has lost value relative to other currencies.

yay for the dropping US$, it means that oil is not getting as expensive as in the US (percentage wise)
