and who exactly on the city council do you want to take kwame's place? To me this doesn't look like they are trying to oust kwame for the sake of the city but so one of them can sit on top of hte spoils. And as much as I like John Conyers, the fact that Monica is married to him doesn't make her any good.

I very much disagree. The man, if he had any honor at all and respect for the office, would see that he no longer has the ability to carry out his job. The city has no trust in him. Did you see the poll by the Detroit News, the Free Press and four news networks that showed that a vast majority of the people of the City of Detroit as well as citizens around the state want him gone?

And as much as I like John Conyers, the fact that Monica is married to him doesn't make her any good.

Hmm. Do you use this same logic when discussing Ms. Clinton's chances for the Presidency?

yes. when hillary first started her campaign i thought that bill was clinton #1 and hillary clinton #2, but the more I see her the more I notice differences between the two, in policies, style, everything. Same with the conyers, I started out thinking that monica conyers must be a good politicians because she's married to john conyers, who I like, but the more I learn about her, the less I like what she has done.

And of course it doesn't matter what citizens around the state think of kwame, that's one of the reasons that detroiters used to like him so much is because he would really put down the 'burbs.

kwame is not a very good mayor. but the problem you see is that nobody who is talented and ambitious wants the job of mayor of detroit. It's such an awful job. That's why jennifer granholm, who I like, doesn't want to step in, it's that old "you break it you own it" problem. If she steps in to fix problems in detroit, if it gets any worse she'll be blamed for it, and the problems there are so bad, it's difficult to fix them.

Two words: Dennis Archer.

great. except you go and convince him to take the job. Like I said, it's a job not many people want. In 2001 he said he would never take on the job of mayor of detroit again. He'll probably run for governor in 2010 instead.

My point is, if we could get a Dennis Archer, we could get another person like him.

I'll do it!

Now I just need Detroit residency and to be able to convince people that I actually care about the city, though I'm from the suburbs and have been living in Lansing for over a decade.

Goddamnit.

Upon further thought, I'm really curious. Do you think Detroit could accept a Skippy? :)

Oh I see your point. But understand that when detroit tarred and feathered dennis archer hung him out to dry blamed him for all the problems and blamed for poor response times for city police, blamed for allowing the city to deteriorate told that it was his fault that HUD didn't release funds to detroit, told that it was his fault that detroit city schools were failing and then you do remember the entire second term he had to face a special election, a recall election that would have thrown him out of office.

When smart public officials look at detroit they see dennis archer thrown out on his ear and how archer vowed he would never do it again. He was made an example of.

That article on the "cult" in Texas highlights some of the problems of modern child welfare. There aren't any checks or balances, the court has absolute power. A significant percentage of the clients I worked with told me they became embroiled with protective services after false accusations, mainly by vindictive neighbors and relatives. I was convinced of it in some cases.

So, what could be the fix?

Would I would propose would be some kind of dual system that incorporates a family advocate, so you have more balance.

Instead of going in with their guns blazing in TX (removal of children), they should have requested access to the facility and do an assessment. I suspect the "cult" was resistant to this, probably helped to escalate the protective services response.
