The presidency is now a criminal conspiracy

It is a fact startling in its cynical simplicity and it requires cynical and simple words to be properly expressed: The presidency of George W. Bush has now devolved into a criminal conspiracy to cover the ass of George W. Bush.

Poll finds Americans split on taking military action in Iran -- We've gotten too used to illegal war. But I highlight this for the same reason Daily Kos did: "Bush reached an unwelcome record. [...] For the first time in the history of the Gallup Poll, 50% say they 'strongly disapprove' of the president. Richard Nixon had reached the previous high, 48%, just before an impeachment inquiry was launched in 1974."

House Votes to Override Bush’s Veto of Water Projects

The House voted 361 to 54 this evening to override President Bush's veto of a $23 billion water projects bill, apparently sealing Mr. Bush's first defeat in a veto showdown with Congress.

The House tally was well over the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto. And since the Senate voted for the bill by 81 to 12 on Sept. 24, it seems certain that the bill’s supporters will have enough votes in the Senate as well to override the veto, which the president announced last Friday.

If the Senate does vote as expected, this will be the first of Mr. Bush’s five vetoes during his two terms as president to be overridden.

Bush is a paper tiger. He needs to be shown that his veto isn't all-powerful, even with this Congress.

Musharraf Plays Bush for a Fool

One of the replies echoes something I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] dionysus1999 the other night: that Bush is watching Pakistan and seeing it as a trial run for whatever might happen next year.
