Went to one of the local writers' groups last night. I took a while deciding what piece to pass around, finally choosing "Wildlife at Sagebrush Ranch," which hasn't significantly changed since I wrote it nearly two years ago. I got some good feedback, though a lot of it was... I don't want to say guarded. Perhaps halting.

This was the second time in a month I've been there, and I've noticed that I really don't give much feedback on prose. Which might be part of the reason why I stopped going in the first place. But there seems to be more poets in the mix these days, so I'm thinking I'll start going again, at least for a little while, to see what I can contribute and to get that wonderful feedback.

(By the way, I've added a few more poems to my memories. I'm almost to 300.)

Yes! The Bible inspired me... to make a marketable item! The power of religion.

Don't Marry Career Women (found in [livejournal.com profile] feminist)

To be clear, we're not talking about a high-school dropout minding a cash register. For our purposes, a "career girl" has a university-level (or higher) education, works more than 35 hours a week outside the home and makes more than $30,000 a year.

If a host of studies are to be believed, marrying these women is asking for trouble. If they quit their jobs and stay home with the kids, they will be unhappy (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2003). They will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Social Forces, 2006). You will be unhappy if they make more money than you do (Journal of Marriage and Family, 2001). You will be more likely to fall ill (American Journal of Sociology). Even your house will be dirtier (Institute for Social Research).

Giant nests perplex experts (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] fizzyland)

To the bafflement of insect experts, gigantic yellow jacket nests have started turning up in old barns, unoccupied houses, cars and underground cavities across the southern two-thirds of Alabama.

[...] In previous years, a yellow jacket nest was no larger than a basketball, Ray said. It would contain about 3,000 workers and one queen. These gigantic nests may have as many as 100,000 workers and multiple queens.

Without a cold winter to kill them this year, the yellow jackets continued feeding in January and February -- and layering their nests[.]
