Nov. 14th, 2005 12:37 amI just heard former President Carter tell Larry King that he would support restrictions on Roe v. Wade. Specifically, that the only cases in which abortion should be allowed (as far as Christians are concerned--I must state that he cast the remarks as something "Christ would never support")--would be in the instances of rape or incest, or for the health of the mother. Any other reasons would be invalid, presumably because they would be immoral.
I really hope it's not too late to remind the electorate that the United States was never founded on the beliefs of the Christian religion. It was founded on the belief in the rights of the individual. Abortion is one of the most private of decisions. It is something that is rarely discussed outside of the immediate families involved. That is a situation where the state does not have a compelling interest. Morality alone is not a compelling interest.
