I just heard former President Carter tell Larry King that he would support restrictions on Roe v. Wade. Specifically, that the only cases in which abortion should be allowed (as far as Christians are concerned--I must state that he cast the remarks as something "Christ would never support")--would be in the instances of rape or incest, or for the health of the mother. Any other reasons would be invalid, presumably because they would be immoral.

I really hope it's not too late to remind the electorate that the United States was never founded on the beliefs of the Christian religion. It was founded on the belief in the rights of the individual. Abortion is one of the most private of decisions. It is something that is rarely discussed outside of the immediate families involved. That is a situation where the state does not have a compelling interest. Morality alone is not a compelling interest.

So disappointing-

We all know that wealth white Southern men have a direct line to Christ. That's how they can always tell the rest of us what he would or wouldn't do.

Damn. I liked Jimmy up until that.

My jaw was just on the floor when I heard him say that.

Clinton is from the South, too, but seems to have a better understanding of why abortion needs to remain in the realm of personal choice--it's a privacy matter.

Abortion is one area where ethics and morals diverge. Morals are overarching, set in stone. Ethics are tailored necessarily to the situation at hand. Carter was right when he said that abortion in the U.S. is irresolvable--it pits morality against ethics, and we children of Puritans are not ready to engage in that fight.

I feel free to disagree with him on that issue, however, he is otherwise a rather good hope for the dismantling of the Bush Reich.
I would love to read his newest book.

I think that abortion can often be considered immoral, and do not consider that to be a sectarian, Christian-only stance.

On the other hand, I consider legal restriction on abortion to represent another, more dangerous potential immorality.

In a perfect world there would be no need for abortion.

However we live in a real world (or at least I do anyway some of the time).
