I came home after having a good time with [livejournal.com profile] netmouse, [livejournal.com profile] murphyw, and [livejournal.com profile] rikhei last night. It was very late by the time I got home, around 12:30. The kitchen light was left on, but it was dark everywhere else. I went upstairs and peeked into my parents' room. My dad was in the bed, completely covered up, illumined by the TV. My mother was gone. At that moment, I felt his loneliness, even from his sleep, and I wished I'd been home earlier.

Tonight there is the season premiere of Survivor, and then the kickoff of the NFL season. I think we'll watch football together.

One of the reasons I feel America doesn't have a culture is because culture depends on a remembrance of the past--that is, history. Americans on the whole consider history an interesting pastime but nothing terribly important. We have a dislocated sense of time.
