I have one for me. I bought one for my (most recent) ex-gf.
I strongly recommend the two volume set over the one volume one. Yes, it's older, but much more pleasant to read.
FYI, they do turn up at used bookstores on occasion (and book sales). Average price seems to be around $125, if that helps you prioritize at all (I know it's a lot of money, but I had set a mental "buy price" at $70 and had looked for years before I finally caved and paid what it was worth).
I have an old Oxford Compact Dictionary, which is an OK one volume dictionary of British English. I would love to have the 20 volume edition, and if I could afford to I would subscribe to the OED on-line. For now there's Ask Oxford.

After you get one, you MUST read http://www.amazon.com/Meaning-Everything-Oxford-English-Dictionary/dp/0198607024
It's incredible.
