Response to caller 'a serious mistake,' says Planned Parenthood of Idaho: They also criticized The Advocate for trying to discredit employees with recorded phone calls

Planned Parenthood of Idaho officials apologized Wednesday for what they called an employee's "serious mistake" in encouraging a donation aimed at aborting black babies.

[...] The call to Idaho came in July to Autumn Kersey, vice president of development and marketing for Planned Parenthood of Idaho.

On the recording provided by The Advocate, an actor portraying a donor said he wanted his money used to eliminate black unborn children because "the less black kids out there the better."

Kersey laughed nervously and said: "Understandable, understandable. ... Excuse my hesitation, this is the first time I've had a donor call and make this kind of request, so I'm excited and want to make sure I don't leave anything out."

I have mixed feelings about this. If it was the police doing this, it would be called entrapment. The person answering the phone is just trying to do a job, one she probably doesn't get paid much for. This certainly doesn't prove much of anything about Planned Parenthood.

The person who answered the call was the Vice-President of Marketing.

I didn't notice that fact in the article. Certainly puts a different kind of spin on it.

This is my frustration with Planned Parenthood, they are notoriously awful to their patients and often disliked in the abortion community - there are some good ones and some very awful ones.

But come on! Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist! PP's founding mission was to prevent the birth of poor children and children of color. She even spent considerable time in India trying to prevent the birth of more Indians.

The fact that abortion itself is so maligned means we don't get a chance to talk about this in the open. How can we critique PP when it's one of the only places women have to go, especially in Idaho. But surprise! Racism exists in a movement dominated by white, middle-class women, who would have guessed?

Sorry. /rant.

PP gets me going.......

Thanks for the link.

No problem.

I didn't know about Sanger's eugenicist background until people at [livejournal.com profile] feminist were discussing it. The history I'd heard spoke much more about her dealings with the government regarding birth control, more often than not framed as a First Amendment issue.

The college I studied at actually has all of her papers and I've read a good deal of her correspondence, some of it is chilling.
