I think what we do leads to a selection of options that could be called "fate." In other words, if I smash my head with a hammer, I'm fated to feel pain, cause-and-effect style. I do believe, however, that I usually have a choice of whether or not to smash my head with the hammer. Unless someone's holding a gun to my head...

Unless you were wearing a helmet. Or had you a difference in physiology that inhibited your pain response. Or if the hammer were a Nerf hammer. Or if you were aiming for your reflection.

You're right. I should have been more specific. I meant that I was aiming at my actual head, no protective gear, with a small sledgehammer, and I actually have a low threshold for pain...
