And I'm sure they're not remotely as safe as LSD.

Heh, my first thought: where are so many people finding LSD?

Um. at least in the northeast, it's pretty easy to find adequate to high quality acid (Gone are the days of needing 5 drops of overpriced liquid to get off!) Word has it that most of the crystal is coming from the california, but there's also been talk about it coming from amsterdam, belgium, and israel.

It's nowhere near as rare as it was early 2004, when the chemists in the missile silo had been busted and a variety of other manufacturers had yet to step up and fill that void. (The people in the kansas silo have been credited with being as much as 2/3 of the world's LSD source at the time). Additionally, distribution networks have re-expanded following the disbanding of Phish and the folks that followed it. (That acid distribution network was, I'm told, more or less the same one that had followed the Grateful Dead and their fans.) I'm also told that there's been a slow surge in the last 5-15 years of people interested in psychedelics and mind expansion, after decades where ups and downs were the drugs of popular choice. Got nothing to back this up, but I figure that an increased interest in the drugs got some dealer-types thinking that there was a growing market for it, so production etc got boosted for financial reasons.

That said, in NY, acid still costs about twice what it really should. I'm told that in calif, it's back almost to regular cheap levels.

interesting. I had heard that the drought was over, but have not seed evidence of that yet myself. Of course I'm not in college anymore!

I felt like there was a popular surge in interest in psychedelics that peaked in the late 90's, and has subsided since then. But then, again, that's when I was in college...

I was in college in the late 90s, but never even smoked pot until after I left. I suppose you could graph the surge in psychedelic use with the growth and decline of the rave culture (most specifically (read as: easiest to track) in England, but in the US, southeast Asia, and Goa (and also I suppose Israel, as much of the Goa party scene was Israelis on spring break..)) While the scene has waned considerably since the second summer of love in England, it still exists, and the drugs are still there for it... *shrug*

Just to nitpick with the article..
The cough syrup and soda mixture that gained fame and populity in the rap/hip-hop community in the south is generally called purple drank, or sizurp. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizurp) .. however, while it and the cough syrup use mentioned in this article have the obvious thing in common - people taking cough medicine to get high -- the article is missing one critical difference. Sizurp doesn't use a DXM-containing cough syrup for drug effects. It instead uses prescription-regulated syrups containing codeine (opioid) and promethazine (mild hypnotic sedative.) As such, purple drank and dxm use really shouldn't be compared with or related to each other.

I hope someone points this out to the idiots who changed the law that makes me stand in line at the pharmacy counter and show my drivers license to buy pseudoephedrine so that meth addicts have to get their meth from Mexican cartels instead of local labs.

It's a ridiculous statute. We have it here in Michigan, too. Adults should be able to buy pseudoephedrine OTC as they have been doing for years. This is the nanny state at work.

The truly sad thing is, even professionals get confused. Last year, I witnessed a doctor stating that DXM had the components for making meth.

DXM is so freakin crazy! I've never done it by chugging cough syrup though; I had powder. But yeah, it's way more out there than LSD, and definitly an important thing for anyone who is interested in altered mental states to experience a few times. Though LSD is good too!
