Part of me is convinced that Ms. Clinton has Karl Rove on retainer.

Another part sees Mr. Rove's 2008 strategy working: frame the Democratic opposition as solely being about Ms. Clinton, thus creating an echo chamber and a self-fulfilling prophecy where the media focuses solely on Ms. Clinton and fails to even mention her competition by name.

I still maintain that John Edwards has a fantastic chance of turning "conventional wisdom" on its head in Iowa. (I haven't been following New Hampshire, so I can't speak to that arena.)

At this point I would vote for Countess Erzsébet Báthory if she were the Democratic nominee.

She really seems like more of a Republican, doesn't she?

No more so than Dianne Feinstein!

The national media as a whole seem to think it's a foregone conclusion that the race is going to be Clinton vs. Giuliani. No one else shows up on the radar, even though (IMO) there are better candidates in both parties.

In Giuliani's case, I would say they're flat-out wrong. I would be surprised if he even comes in second among Republicans.

True - but bear in mind that it's pretty much standard for the early wisdom on primary races to be wrong. If I recall correctly, neither Kerry nor Clinton were frontrunners before the primary elections actually started.

You're right, sir. I recall Dean as a front runner, before he sunk himself with an angry tirade. He would have been better against Bush too.

Dean actually wasn't angry--he was supposedly fired up, excited. But, as he'd come in third in a competition where he was expected to win, his enthusiasm made him seem like a madman.

My take: I think Rove is being honest, for once. I think he genuinely believes Clinton is the kind of person who has a realistic chance of being nominated, and her opponents aren't.

Rove is playing off of this trick: Define your opposition before your opposition defines it for you first.

I wish Edwards' *wife* was running for Dem candidate. She seems to have a lot of his same stances, but she's even more gay-marriage-friendly. I was just reading about her in The Advocate yesterday.

I hate to say this, but I think the electorate would be very hesitant to vote for someone who has already disclosed that s/he has a terminal disease. Even Cheney had to downplay his heart disease during the 2000 race (and still has to).

That said, Ms. Edwards is certainly a plus for John. She is a very effective stump speaker.

American politics are the most tortuous in the democratic world.
