There is this "Homeless bivouac" all over the abandoned state department building and in the tiny park out front. I have no idea who organized it, and even though somebody donated a bunch of pretty new tents, IT LOOKS LIKE THE GREAT DEPRESSION OVER HERE.

I'm in New Orleans, baby.
"third world and proud of it" as they say,
but nobody calls it "the city that care forgot" anymore.

I just saw another example of Louisiana's third world ststus; the worst possible case of ulcerative breast cancer. took all of 8 months to go from lump to "oh damn." No insurance, poor health infrastructure. About 1/2 normal poverty for the area and about 1/2 storm damage, I'm told. I'm shaking all over.

I park my car in front of the sheltered overhang on the side of the building. That area has been full of blankets and sleeping people and umbrella/cardboard wind shelters for months now. The tents are probably only a month old. There was a banner (sheet and paint) with "Homeless Pride" on the gazebo this morning. I am reticent to take photos, it seems... greusome to do so. The people there are almost all black, some white men who look like vets. There are younger women too, and healthy people who may hold jobs. I haven't seen any children. I guess one thing that has changed since the 30's is that the govt is more than equipped to take your kids if you are homeless.
