People who leave their phone on normal volume at the library, and then take the calls.

That said, one of the people was a young mister wearing a Michael Vick shirt. *raised eyebrow*

When I worked at a library, I made up all kinds of things about rules and laws governing cell phone use. In reality, we didn't have any and there weren't any - cell phones weren't NEARLY as prevalent as they are now. I did the same thing when working in Florida at a 7-Eleven. Most people had no trouble believing that it was illegal to be on a cell phone in the store. I never had to listen to their calls again!

I don't have a problem with that. The phone thing, that is. Libraries aren't movie theaters, so telling people they have to turn off their phones isn't reasonable. What's next? Restaurants, stadiums, any public building? We're not talking about cigarettes here, or something else that can harm nearby people.

That said, if your phone is on, either answer it fast or shut off the ringer fast. And if you answer it, talk low. Low conversations in libraries is normal, and at least with phones you only have to hear one end of them.

In a library, it's common courtesy to maintain low levels of volume. I turn my ringer down very low, or even to vibrate or silent. I'm not saying he shouldn't have taken the calls.

Yet, there was a lack of conscientiousness displayed on his part when he would just sit there, looking at the caller ID before answering, then would hold the phone away from his face as he spoke: "What up, 'do?" (or my favorite, "What up... cuz?").

Library woes

I spend scads of time in the library doing research. At least once a week there will be a group carrying on a conversation. When asked to keep quiet, they often get indignant, as if their freedom of speech were imperiled by not talking.
