Newborn screenings rock. They take one sample of blood, and they can screen for tons of things that can cause serious disability or death. The window of treatment on some of these metabolic diseases is mere days before permanent damage is done.

overweight children stigmatized?!?
um, duh.
However, I had no idea cancer kids had a low quality of life, aside from the chemo and cancer, I mean. Do other kids (and adults) tease and denigrate them? I imagine they get a lot of pity and are throughly controlled and that must suck, but fat people are subject to socially sanctioned hate and abuse.
I've been giving a lot of thought to the hatred of fat people lately. What does it mean to the average hater that I (or you) are fat?
Metabolic disorder? Poverty-related nutrition of doom? How is that grounds for intense disgust? Or if not, maybe they "ate themselves to this point." Ya, know, like, emotional eating. Sooooo nobody in America has emotional problems except fat people? Again, even if that were true, why so much hate?
My mom saw a picture of herself at my first college graduation, she was very fat then.
"Oh, look at that! Isn't that horrible!" she exclaimed. (she's had the bypass and now weighs very little)
I blinked. "Well, that is a pretty unfortunate dress you're wearing, but no ma, you were just fat."
