I really identify with the Buddhist teaching that self-loathing isn't really about self-hate. Most people don't really hate themselves. When you go through a patch of what appears to be self-loathing, it's actually because you have a pretty high opinion of yourself, and you're feeling disappointed with yourself for not living up to it. I'm paraphrasing here, but it strikes me as true.

I find it bizarre that anyone would claim that how long it takes one to connect a positive word worth "I" or "me" or "myself" is a better indicator of self-esteem than how a person speaks, behaves, and thinks.
