I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] netmouse and [livejournal.com profile] murphyw Sunday. It was great spending time with them. As my host said as I was leaving, it's nice sometimes just to get together without having an event.

On my way out, they thrust their DVD collection at me, imploring me to take some (as I'd said I might want to raid their discs at some point). [livejournal.com profile] netmouse said, after I remarked that I'd not yet seen Monster's Ball but had heard good things about it, that I should take it, and if I liked it, I might as well keep it. She didn't agree with a lot of the feedback about the movie, how good it was supposed to be.

I watched it last night, and I was taken aback at how good it was. Now, I suspect this has something to do with the fact that I identify with the story somewhat (being a black woman exposed to racism; dating white men, some of which have come from racist backgrounds; and being poor). But I thought the movie was fantastic. I didn't know Halle Berry had done such an amazing job.

Of course, I was thrilled to see a sex scene between a black woman and white man. It doesn't happen that often on the big screen. :)
