I had an uncle who wouldn't eat anything he or his close relations hadn't raised himself. He gave up coffee after he decided he couldn't trust the chain of custody of coffee beans. I have other cousins who practice various flavors of Mennonite religion, whose general response to any food crisis is to say, "We told you so."
Around here, you can buy homegrown beef (and buffalo!) from the Pinckney Hardware, and lots of homegrown produce at the various farmers markets in Ann Arbor, Ypsi, Dexter, etc. This way the food is only one degree of separation from the farm; I don't want to think about how many degrees it takes to get (say) grapes here from (say) Chile.
I have come to understand that getting my food from the grocery store is absolutely a calculated risk, but I'm just not up for the alternative.
