DXM hits MSN's front page: Teens turn to cough syrup to get high, feds say

I'm glad that the National Institute on Drug Abuse has decided to track this trend (the article says that this is the first year of the government doing so). Still, some of the articles in the wake of the study disappointed me with their small bits of misinformation.

and your glad why? we're already past the breaking point there is enough attention on the subject of dxm that eventually it will be just as controlled as pseudophed and the like.

Because, IMO, from a public policy point of view, it's important to know exactly what substances teens are using. A few years ago, I was thinking about what would be necessary in order to do talks at high schools about DXM, but if schools weren't aware there was a need for it, how would I go about that? I thought about making up a questionnaire and having to distribute surveys, and analyzing them. Now someone with the same idea as me wouldn't necessarily have to go through all that.

I still am of the opinion that people should wait until their twenties, when the brain has completed most of its growing, to engage in substances. *shrug*

I already have to show ID at most places when I purchase DXM (CVS is a notable exception). I don't think it will join Sudafed behind the counter, where you have to sign and verify how many packages you're buying.
