Next year, I predict, will be a dark year for our country.
Newspapers have been reporting that Bush and Rove are upbeat about the upcoming elections, not even planning for if they lose.
The polls, as they stand now, indicate that the House is lost for Republicans and the Senate, while a stretch, could be taken. Imagine this scenario: On November 7, the exit polls all indicate a sweep for Democrats, but the official results have Republicans still in power.
Those who contest the results may be designated unlawful enemy combatants and whisked away to the prisons the government has been building in the West that now stand empty but can house up to 300,000 people (last I heard).
What happens then?
This is all a figment of my imagination. We still have three weeks before the midterm elections. But the President now has the power--the legal authority--to designate anyone as an "unlawful enemy combatant" and set up tribunals of his own making for the trials. Habeas corpus is eliminated for these people.
What happens then?
I almost certainly will be among the disappeared in the coming years. I have been a lifelong Democrat, have consistently criticized the government, and am a student of American culture. My name was recently printed in Ms. Magazine regarding abortion. I already have an FBI file with fingerprints. I've signed countless petitions in the last six years protesting various laws and rules that the government has put in place. I've protested the war by walking in peace marches. I have deep-rooted liberal beliefs and a high regard for the Constitution. I've been a member of the ACLU.
It's only a matter of time before the New Inquisition begins.

Date: 2006-10-18 06:35 pm (UTC)as for centcom blogging...its hard to believe maybe, but they've already got operatives working covertly on the blogosphere. i visited the mike malloy show message board awhile back, and there was one poster who i'm convinced was working for the gov't. he claimed to be a former demolitions expert for the army, and vehemently debunked any WTC7 talk, but always being sure to bash Bush, and only Bush, in a very general and ludicrous way. when you interacted with him, it was like he had a hard time going off script...and when people confronted him about being an operative, he reacted so strangely. hard to explain, but i have no doubt who he was.

Date: 2006-10-18 08:09 pm (UTC)The US already has a larger proportion of its population incarcerated -- around 1% -- than any other country in the world. We could easily incarcerate another 1% or so. That's 1 in 100 people.

Date: 2006-10-18 06:42 pm (UTC)The polling machine thing is worrisome. That said, if the numbers aren't close then they likely won't be tampered with. So, the ambiguity needs to lift from the eyes of the masses - the ones who just lost Habeus Corpus. Because apparently the Magna Carta is soft on terrorism.

Date: 2006-10-18 06:47 pm (UTC)I think the reason Rove is "upbeat" is because the Republicans squirreled away $100 million they're going to use in Tennesse, Virginia, Missiouri and other states in the next few weeks.

And the rest, IMO, is just bluff and bluster trying to stimulate turnout

Date: 2006-10-19 12:14 am (UTC)It's mostly irrelevant, since they're fixing ballot boxes all over the country.

Date: 2006-10-18 07:50 pm (UTC)If there is still time to vote, people will go vote for the winner, even if they weren't previously going to do so. If however, they were going to vote for the loser, either they stay home or don't vote at all. I remember some elections where called elections changed the vote totals as much as 25%. You want incentive for Rove being optimistic there it is!! If he tells his voters that he thinks he'll lose the house he'll lose an addition 10 seats by admitting it, at the very least.
