Do I curl my tongue when people ask me if I can? Yes. Do I curl my tongue in everyday situations, or perhaps to smoke a cigarette? No. Do I curl my tongue as foreplay? Erm, not exactly, though we could go into the technical details and it may turn out that I technically do. Ahem. Do I curl my tongue as a publicity stunt? No, that's what cherry stems are for.
It doesn't seem to have any obvious survival value, so I'd guess its linked to something else that is. There are all kinds of interesting instinctive responses that occur when we are infants.
Perhaps digressing almost entirely off the subject, your response reminds me of my opinion on the possibility of being able to correct my myopia through gene therapy- if my intelligence is in any way linked chromosomally to my myopia, I'd much rather be near-sighted than less intelligent...
As for reasons, it is often in response to someone else doing so, or, as in this case, a simple mention of the behavior; otherwise, for self-amusement or, occasionally, attempting (as if it were truly so impressive) trying to impress someone (usually female, usually attractive, usually someone who has mentioned an inability to do so- otherwise, at least for the first two criteria, why bother?).

but not the other way (from front to back).
I do occasionally. Several times this morning since you mentioned it....
