In the article they said :"Griffiths says that in the future psilocybin might have a therapeutic use, perhaps helping people who have just learned they have cancer come to terms with the news."
I think they are nuts. Taking something like that in a bad headspace is more likely to send them on a bad "trip" from what I have heard.
I disagree. I would encourage you to read about the Good Friday experiment. While psychedelic journeys necessarily entail a chance to go into a bad trip, the set and setting have a great deal to do with the overall ambiance or feel of the trip. That is to say, your environment will help determine your experience. That includes the people you have around you, what they say, etc. I think that low doses administered in a therapeutic setting could indeed help some people come to terms with such otherwise very traumatic news.

yes, this is something else I have heard to be true.
Personally I think there are natural and conscious ways to take care of these situations that are much more productive and with ...the minimum risk possible.
I can allow for the possible exceptions you mention "some people" but generally, if they can't come to grips with things on a conscious level....I don't think they are prime candidates for a "trip" either.
I can't judge for people. I would hope that this would be something that a therapist or a doctor would be able to ascertain with the person in question. Every individual is just that--an individual. Not everyone responds to the same news with an identical reaction.
I have friends who absolutely should not do psychedelic substances, because they don't trust themselves on them. That's the criteria. It's the person's comfort level that's the issue.
I don't know that therapists or doctors are so hot on these things either. Each person is an individual, not just as a social being but as a little unique chemical formula running around.
They really don't know what is going to happen when they give someone a drug/substance.
I know folks who have had challenges with meds. Most doctors do not know the meds well, they know what the drug rep told them. Even things as "simple" as blood pressure meds and allergy meds get played with to get the right dose and version...and you wish to give them the option to do that with hallucinagins?
ohhhh noooooooo. I don't think it is a good idea.
Also, just because someone is comfortable with the idea of the drug does not make them a good candidate.
It might be one good aspect...but certainly not all that one needs to look at.
I am also into natural health. So it is likely that we will disagree on this, and just agree to let it be so.
The doctors will be using processed mushrooms..or essence of them..not just a mushroom. I would put money on that one.
Just because a substance is natural doesn't mean a person knows the best way to use it or that it is meant to be ingested.
It might be here on the planet to remove paint or dye hair or something.
I am into natural health...I felt that way about a lot of natural substances in the past. I have seen a lot of things that changed my mind/views.
Though...I might feel better about natural mushrooms than the processed version.
Now...there are religions/cultures that have been using this stuff for generations.
I would actually feel better with them in charge of giving the folks the shrooms. Maybe with a dr in the area..but with them in charge as they have likely have a lot more experience with handling folks who have a variety of reactions and can help them.
Medical doctors though...therapists....no.
They tend to deal with things other than emotion and in unemotional ways as well.
I prefer folks who work wholistically, and I mean that spelling as far as dealing with whole folks as a whole folk.

Just my opinion.
