Nov. 12th, 2001 12:04 pm"The Enlightenment," that grand philosophical movement of the 1700s-1900s (and carrying on to this day), was self-named by its proponents. Few other philosophical movements were named in the same manner.
That would explain why I couldn't understand why such a movement of raw rationalism could possibly go under the moniker "the enlightenment." I've always wondered about that.
