It's amazing now, to me, how we as a society just don't mention New Orleans.

We're extolled to go on about our business lives. Much like we were when the towers fell. "America is open for business."

We're not to mourn as a country. For that would cause us to have national grief--grief that transcends the personal. We're to ignore what would bind us.

Divide and conquer.

Not to mention I had an online friend in Biloxi, Mississippi, who told me her city was just as screwed up and had received no help or atttention whatsoever. I've had people from places like Pennsylvania say to my face "Fuck New Orleans!". More of that blame the victim mentality that's also the American Way.

I'm sure there is some negativity. But we can't all just pick up and leave and drive down there and listen to their stories and help make them dinner and boil water for them to drink. I have no idea what you expect to happen. Is this a complaint that the government is doing enough? Are you asking for a moment of silence at noon on the anniversary of the day Katrina first hit shore? Or do you really expect that the entire country stop what it's doing and crowd the area such that it's so overclogged with people that there's nothing anyone can do, but try to squeeze between people like we're at an overcrowded club?

Umm, it's been talked about on the news practically every day for nearly a year. What more do you want? It was THE news story for about three months, and I hear something about it every couple of days even WITHOUT paying too much attention to the news. You're trivializing all that WAS done and I'm not sure why. I personally know someone who gave up her job and left her friends to move down to NOLA to work for the Red Cross. And now that hurricane season is coming again, all that they talk about is the "lessons of Katrina" and what can be done to prevent another catastrophe. Again, what more do you want?
