I wish all the studies, fuding, and articles about building more walkable/bikeable cities weren't so fixated on the so-called obesity epidemic.

Everyone of every size in this country could use good opportunities for exercise, but more exercise won't auto-magically turn fat people into average size people.

That being said, I'm really grateful for Ypsi to building the exercise path out back of my house; we use it a lot. We just got back from a bike ride.

On the one hand, a focus on obesity is reasonable because obesity is a clear and obvious marker for risk.

On the other hand, the degree of the focus is excessive given that it's not, fercrissakes, the only marker for risk; it's certainly far from perfect as a marker for risk; and why ignore all the other markers?

So the only reasonable conclusion is that quoting of the factual basis is too often a cover-up for good old bigotry.

I read a good medical website article on the issue, members-only, but I reposted it here:

Yes, I'm definitely in favor of a Health At Every Size Approach. In fact, I'm one of the co-mods for [livejournal.com profile] haes.
