Can you imagine if americans actually had to pay real gas prices like the rest of the first world? How about $4.50 like Canadians, or maybe $6 like the UK?
What's changed? The world has already reached peak oil - from now on, less will be extracted every year at increasing effort. Production going down, cost of production going up, and demand still going up - that's the basics, as I understand it.
Well, that really doesn't explain the oil/gas companies made record profits this year - the largest corporate profits in North American history. Americans do pay "real" gas prices - obviously enough to keep Exxon and Mobil and the rest of them rolling in cash. The cost in Canada and Europe reflects the obscene amounts of tax those governments put on petrol.
