"When your wife is insulted and embarrassed, you do tend to get a little offended," Young said yesterday, explaining his upbraiding of Gainer that night and his fervent speech on the House floor yesterday morning, when he waved the shirt and bellowed about his wife's ejection: "Shame! Shame!"

Young said he wouldn't be so mad if it were just Sheehan. "I totally disagree with everything she stands for," he said. But by removing his wife, Gainer's officers clearly "acted precipitously," Young said.

The Capitol's Tempest in a T-Shirt

So, let me get this straight. A Congressman doesn't care that someone's civil rights may have been violated because he doesn't agree with her viewpoint, but as long as it was his wife who was wronged, then he's upset.

Right.

That pretty much sums up the Republican position. If you're not like me, screw you.

your blood is your family man.

If someone takes my family and puts them in jail I don't care if they are guilty or innocent I want them out, it's like that 4H pledge. . .

I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking
my HEART to greater loyalty
my HANDS to larger service
and my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country and my world.

Except in real life you pledge first of all

To YOU, your first duty is the ole #1, your own self
next, to your blood, your family, your wife, your kids, your sisters, brothers mom & dad, whoever your family is.

The rest of the hierarchy follows the 4H pledge, your local club, then your community, next the nation and last the world.

That's how it rolls. You gotta protect your blood, you can't rely on anyone else doing it. That's what Young did.

I don't really think this is a question of first ammendment rights, nor one of hypocrisy, more a question of a guy defending his wife.

Yes, but it's generally considered unseemly for people, even Republican Senators, to exercise blatant favoritism and selectivity in enforcing First Amendment rights. Such things are usually phrased as "they were right to ask both to leave, under their interpretation of the rules, but I'm a little upset on behalf of my wife," rather than as "my wife's special, who gives a rat's ass about that other un-American lady?"

:-P

Oh, they had to make it that way. They realized very quickly that this was going to be explosive on the news, so they had to make everything equal.

The drama in cotton unfolded when Sheehan, who received a spectator ticket from Rep. Lynn C. Woolsey (D-Calif.), took her seat and unzipped her jacket, revealing her antiwar message. Sheehan's son, Casey, was a soldier who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

A Capitol Police officer spotted the words, pointed to her and yelled, "Protester!" Sheehan said. "He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat, and roughly . . . shoved me up the stairs," she said, adding that she was handcuffed, taken away, fingerprinted and booked.

That was before the speech.

About 45 minutes into the speech
, an officer asked Beverly Young to step outside, where he told her: "We consider you a protester" because of her shirt, she said.(emphasis mine)

I emphasize that because it was never clear in early accounts of what happened when the two events took place.

unfortunately it's not reasonable to expect politicions to be true to the ideals of this nation.
