Unfortunately, with most Americans being sheep this actually works. It works for their priests, and it works for their politicians. If he only manages to convince the stupid people, he still has 80% or more of the population under his thumb. Apparently intelligence isn't required to rule, just an appearance of piety and the Big Lie.
