Would you support the War on Terrorism if the government gave up the War on Drugs?
I would have to say no. This is despite how much I vehemently hate this ridiculous propaganda campaign that is euphemized as "The War on Drugs".
I have to say this because I'm a pacifist at heart. I'm also a defender of civil liberties. For those reasons, I could not in any sense compromise my principles and support this farce of a "peace action".
"Pre-emptive war". What a load of crap. Sounds like Hitlerism to me.

Always with the reasonable...

Date: 2003-02-20 08:51 am (UTC)Perhaps "drug lords" commit acts of terrorism in South America, but I wonder where the real responsibility for that lies? If drugs were not illegal in the U.S., it seems likely that "drug lord" operations would mutate into "respectable" businesses, or "respectable" corporations would move in.

Date: 2003-02-20 10:43 am (UTC)- Other countries than the US are consumers of illegal drugs.
- There's no reason to believe that drug lords would give up their control of local production operations for the sake of being "respectable".
- While the WoD has focussed mostly on softer drugs, because it's easier to prosecute, let's not forget that hard drugs are actually bad for people, and should be illegal.
- Drug operations are quasi military empires that flaunt local governments, kill judges and prosecuters, and keep indigent workers in near slavery working conditions. The responsibility for that lies with the person who chooses to do that.
