It's interesting: the story of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem from Greek desecration during their pagan winter holiday (known as "Channukah" to more of the western world) about 130 years before the historical Yeshu'a ["Jesus"] was born demonstrates that it wasn't "church officials", but Sun and Saturn-worshippers who convinced millions of Europeans that this was a "holy occasion". In fact, in the 275 CE, the Roman Emperor Aurelian proclaimed December 25th as the 'DIES NATALI SOLIS INVICTI' - the "Nativity of the Invincible Solis [sun-god]"... half a century before Constantine I (an avowed devotee of Solis until his deathbed baptism) converted the official religion of Rome to Christianity.
