Astonishing House of Commons Vote

I have just been listening to one of those historic debates in the House of Commons that make it compulsive viewing.

The debate and vote was on a piece of anti-terrorism legislation which would allow a suspect to be held without charge for ninety days.

Tony Blair refused to compromise last week against signs that many in his own party were opposed to the legislation. With Labour rebels combining with the Lib Dems and the Conservative Party, the vote was expected to be close

The vote has now been taken. THE GOVERNMENT AND TONY BLAIR HAS BEEN DEFEATED. Defeated by a huge margin of 31.

[...] Tony Blair has lost his authority and it is an authority that will no longer carry the House of Commons into supporting another Iraq adventure. George Bush may still have a friend but he no longer can view the UK as a reliable ally in his aggression.

Here is The Guardian's take on it.
