And in case anyone is wondering: No, I don't have a thing for my dad. I have had some weirdass imagery in my dreams from time to time, though. While the poem has a confessional feel, it is not the straight truth. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Well, there's a history of confusion about this piece. I had submitted this to my college's literary magazine at the same time that I was one the submission committee. (Names are removed from submissions to maintain anonymity.) The people on the committee were concerned that the piece was the literal truth and how couuld they publish anything like that. It was at that point that I had to break confidentiality and explain to them that the piece was greatly fictionalized (as noted by the words "dream" and "nightmare"). When they could see it in the context of fiction, they were able to accept the piece as art.

I'm just amazed that my colleagues were unable to distinguish the difference between the actual "I" (the author) and the fictional "I" (the speaker). It's one of the first lessons you learn when critiquing.

You would think it would come naturally to someone interested in literature...

its definitely someone else's cigar. I think one of the gifts of poetry is to be able to 'confess' on behalf of others.
