I checked out The Lathe of Heaven on DVD from the Ypsilanti Public Library. It's based apparently on Ursula K. Le Guin's "masterpiece".

I didn't know what a nugget of sci-fi gold I'd laid my hands on.

I watched the sucker two times in a row.

Public television turned out a film this good? Damn. And in 1979. I might have actually seen this as it debuted on TV.

That movie was JUNK. I was so happy hearing about it when it was in the making, as I LOVE the book. The movie doesn't come close to doing it justice...

Usually, the movie can't match the book. That said, I haven't read the book in question, so I can't know how far off it strayed from the original story.

Still, this was a film put together by the public broadcasting system. It's a made-for-TV movie. I'm sure if someone were to recast the film today with contemporary special effects, it could be quite well done.

The thing I liked most about it were the dream sequences. I felt they were extremely accurate--just the kind of patterns that show up in dreams.
