The bad news: Trying to take off my shirt yesterday resulted in throwing my left shoulder out of joint. This has caused everything around that joint to shift, so now my clavicle is rubbing up against something else. At this rate, I will need to consult an anatomy textbook to figure out how I need to shift in order to put things right. (I have an appointment with a chiropractor next Thursday, so we'll see what she says after our first session.)

The good news:

I got the job.

Yesterday as the day was ending, I talked myself into asking. I just had the feeling that it was mine for the asking, but if I didn't do anything about it, nothing would be done.

When I approached my boss, I was casual but confident. When I told him I'd like to discuss something with him, he said, "You aren't looking for another job, are you?" I said, "Not yet!" When I told him I was hoping to stay with the company, he said of course he wanted me to stay. He said that he was just waiting for my trial period with the temp agency to be up so that he could hire me outright. I told him the period was over, and he asked what he needed to do to get me signed up.

We didn't discuss salary or benefits yet, but I did express to him my desire to be something more than a receptionist if I were to stay for any appreciable amount of time. He seemed quite receptive to the idea.

So, heh, yeah, I have no idea how to react. I feel like I should want to jump up and down, but I just have this weird sense of newfound security. Does that make any sense? I'm excitedly content. It's odd.

He was receptive to you not being a receptionist? I find that somehow oddly fitting. :) Congrats.

Negotiating expanded duties is a good thing. Security and benefits are good, but not at the expense of job boredom eating your head.

Congrats, by the way!

The company is so small, I'm sure there are tons of duties I could take on. It's all a matter of which duties, since I'll still be tethered to the phone. But I was able to express to Fred (my boss) that I am interested in learning more about the company and the programs we offer, so I think everything's off to a good start.

And thanks! :)

Congrats!
I've been rather out of it in the LJ world recently - so - sorry if I missed more info in some other post.

I hope you are planning what you will ask for for salary, etc. He knows you will stay short term for not much - but you've expressed that you want to stay long term and do more interesting things. If you can get him to give you the $ offer first - at least be ready to ask for more. - HE IS EXPECTING THAT and will give you a low ball figure. If he wants you to set the $ - ask for what would make you go Yippee! and expect him to come back with something less and know what you'd be reasonabbly happy with. And be prepared to talk to him about why you are worth it. (ability to learn, good work ethic, etc.)

Sorry if I'm duplicating effort here - but I wanted to make sure you know this stuff. Women so often don't ask for more.

Thank you, and you're not duplicating at all. I'm very glad that you've outlined all of this. I'm going to return to this (issue? subject?) all weekend, and what you've said will help. I'm unused to negotiating.
