Darwin's theory evolves into culture war

Ugh! Just, ugh!

You know, I wouldn't be so offended by this "intelligent design" argument, or the assertion that creationism be taught alongside evolution if the same opponents to evolution were willing to say "...and some people believe we were all born from a great sea-turtle." But that just isn't going to happen.

Remember when people had to send their children to private schools to instill a "Christian education" and protect their children from the evils of secular humanism? I guess it's the other way around now.

*nod* It's the same thing with the "holiday season": if you're going to have Christmas trees on campus, you're going to have to have other symbols from many other religions as well so as not to give preferential treatment to one faith over others. I'd like to see a Yule log in an elementary school.

It wasn't enough that private schools exist. Conservatives don't like the idea of public education at all. They're mucking it up with this neo-Creationism and by turning schools into test-taking academies instead of places where students actually learn.

heh - a yule log in an elementary school would be fabulous.

You're also right about schools becoming test-taking academies. Being able to prepare for tests does not equate to learning life-skills that enable a child to become a better student and to better interact in the world. Teaching a child to engage subjects is what moves him/her along that path.

Gods, I hate headlines like this. It isn't a "culture war", it is Evangelical Christians attacking everyone who isn't one of them, including scientists.
*many bad words*
