I would bet the link is not direct, but comes from the other ramifications of being pessimistic or depressed. Life style effect and causes, like lack of exercise, boredom etc.

The article stresses not to take the aggregate and apply it to the individual. I do think there seems to be a strong correlation, at least as far as this study's data is concerned. (Perhaps correlation is too strong of a word. Maybe association?)

recent research in Australia has found that Sex, cryptic crosswords and a good run could help ward off dementia.

So I guess you and I will play a few crosswords if we ever catch up to help stop dementia in each other. Or go for a nice run in your neighbourhood.
