Author of Schiavo memo steps forward

The legal counsel to Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.) admitted yesterday that he was the author of a memo citing the political advantage to Republicans of intervening in the case of Terri Schiavo, the senator said in an interview last night.

Brian Darling, a former lobbyist for the Alexander Strategy Group on gun rights and other issues, offered his resignation and it was immediately accepted, Martinez said.

Therefore... Schiavo is still a story.

Please tell me you are suspicious about what is going on behind the scenes while the world's focus is (still) on Schiavo and The Pope. God, this has to be Karl Rove's wet dream...

The Pope will be news until the end of the day. Tomorrow will be Prince Charles. Schiavo, I don't know how long that will last. (Already, some Republicans are twitchy and just want to put the whole thing behind them. Funny how they react when they find that 60-80% of the country disapproved of what they did.)

Rove is actually involved in policymaking now, so I have an ongoing thread of fear about anything he may want to do. But the Bush White House has been very good at gaining cover for doing things in secret. Why should that change now that we're into the second term?
