ugh...it wouldn't bother me so much if there was actually a lot of oil there. i'd be pissed, but it'd be understandable. 'billions of barrels' sounds like a lot, but we use 20 million a day. say it's two billion barrels up there, and it's enough to last us three months. it's like giving a hungry guy a case of yogurt and sending him into the desert for a year. who does that really help?
I do not accept that site as valid. It is scare tactics meant to sell his book, IMO. He gained a lot of internet popularity due to linking by bloggers - however, keep in mind he is a lawyer in his 20's, not a biologist, geologist, or expert in any of the other fields he is propounding these theories about. I do, however, think we have a problem that we need to seriously address, or it will continue to get worse. We have reached our peak production of oil. We have to find ways to save energy and start using alternative energy sources. They are out there, but have been laughed off as hippie weirdness for years, or "too expensive". Like the article says, there will be a point where rising oil costs will make people stop using it unneccesarily. That may be at $100 a barrel. Also keep in mind that while $4 a gallon seems incredibly high for gas here, the equivalent in Europe is $10. We are paying unfairly low prices due to economic pressure we have put on other countries. This is the largely unadmitted (by the administration) reason for USG presence in the middle east.
Yeah, it's definitely a scare-tactic attempt to sell books, but I still spread it, because I think it's a topic we should be scared about. Whether or not things are as dire as he describes, we're all still being strangled by oil. It's the source of all our foreign policy decisions, and the fact that most people don't see that, when it's so much in plain sight, just dumbfounds me.
Exactly what I was thinking. It'd ruin a wildlife preserve for, at best, a minimal economic boost we won't even SEE for another 10 years, and one which won't last very long once it DOES surface.
And despite this Bush is axing Amtrack. What the FUCK is the man thinking with, sand? Or is he so insulated from reality by his layers and layers of minions that he doesn't even see the problem?
But there's a logical trap hidden within the definitions of 'we' and 'better off' in that statement. For me and you, we means us, and better off means better off. For Bush we means big business, and better off means richer.
Or cheated his way back. Every time I read a story that pisses me off, the anger ends up being deflected back at the american people for refusing to admit the possibility of a fraudulant election. God forbid America be corrupt, we're the beacon of hope and freedom for the rest of the world!
Oh, I *totally* don't rule that out! The problem is, aside from everyone spending all their time on the nation's governance (not gonna happen) or a revolution (probably not happening either) there's no real solution to this. The nuts are running the asylum and unless a large percentage of us get mobilized to take it away from them (and, keep in mind that they control the best trained and equipped military in the history of the world) it'll stay that way. Unless things get way worse than they are (and I really hope they don't!), I doubt that much will change. And the worst part is that that's exactly what the assholes are counting on!
I just wish I could find a site that is more realistic than this one. I feel he is pushing a message of essentially no hope, rather than one of needing to make a change. He says over and over that it is too late, and I strongly disagree.
I actually think the second may be true. Did you know he refuses to read or watch news reports, saying he trusts his advisors to tell him everything he needs to know?
