novapsycheMy father and I had to clean out my great-aunt's apartment last week, because she's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and is now staying in a nursing home. As I was cleaning out her dresser drawers, trying to decide if any given thing was trash-worthy or not, I came across a little brown spiral notebook.
This little notebook was my aunt's personal notes from when she first joined the Spiritual Israel Church, the church of my youth. (My grandmother and another great-aunt were heavily involved in this church. It's a Black church, though in recent years more Caucasians have joined.) The last time she took notes in this book was in 1958.
This is the first page of notes:
The Foundation of Spiritual Israel
(A) Affirm: I want to come out of myself. And I want the Spirit to tell me something.
(B) Center the mind upon the high properties of earth.
(C) 23rd Psalms and the Lord's Prayer--daily meditation.
see 1 Corinthians 12.
Now, I went to the referenced chapter. It's all about spiritual gifts.
I understand now that the church of my youth was (and is) way more mystical than I even could have dreamed. The reason why I never learned this first-hand is because I voluntarily left this church when I was 9, and later became a Free Methodist.

24 and 2 Spiritual Foundation
(A) Wall of Protection: Two forces from the psychic plane. Picture the man [male psychic force] to the right side, the lady to the left.
(B) 24 forces made up of the living. Twelve ladies and twelve men.
(C) Wall of Protection: [write] each one on a small sheet of paper. Write the 24 forces on two sheets of paper. Twelve on each sheet. In case of death replace a name. [The last page in this notebook revealed my aunt's "24 forces"--one of them was Barbara Walters.]
This is a great little notebook. Some of the other titles of pages are: Your Main Spiritual Guide; The Power of a Spiritual Glass of Water; How to Send a Spiritual Message; Spiritual Super-Trance and How to Do It; The Spiritual Double Arrow; Healing One at a Distance; Stopping the Mouths of Liars; How to Make Cloud and Rain Obey You; How to Make Running Water Obey Your Will.
Needless to say, I consider this book a literal treasure. I will be referring to it often as I try to formulate my own form of Spiritual Israel.
